Description: |
Letter from the Office of the Minister for Labour to the Private Secretary, Department of the Secretary, concerning the representations made to the Taoiseach by the 'Ad Hoc Committee of Women's Organisations' and outlining the Minister for Labour's views on the matter. He feels that in the private sector it is the responsibility of the Trade Unions o ensure equal remuneration for equal work as between the sexes, and it is open to them to implement this principle in negotiating wage agreements with the employers. In public employment the Minister for Labour has written personally to the Minster for Finance suggesting that the possibility of applying the principle of equal pay be generally considered. The Minister feels that public opinion would not favour the general removal of barriers on the employment of married women in public employment in view of the substantial extent of male unemployment. However, he does recognise that married women are being employed to a greater extent in the public sector and that the general policy towards the employment of married women will have to be reviewed. |
