Record 138 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Draft memorandum for the Government from the Department of Labour on equal pay for equal work for men and women in the public service. The Minister for Labour expresses his opinion that the government should review its policy on equal pay for equal work, particularly in light of the various conventions and declarations adopted by the United Nations. As there has been increasing pressure from women's organisations, he feels that the Government's policy in relation to equal pay in the public sector is no longer defensible. He concludes that the government should announce acceptance of the principle of equal pay for the same work for men and women in the public sector.
