Report on community development issued by the Economic Development Branch of the Department of Finance, August 1961. The report concerns the progress of community development in other countries and includes a survey of relevant voluntary organisations in Ireland. Section 4, page 15, deals with the Irish Countrywomen's Association [ICA]. The aims and objectives of the Association are outlined in detail. 'To develop and improve the conditions of rural life in Ireland by means of educating countrywomen in arts and crafts, in agricultural science, in domestic science, social studies ... in 1955, the ICA was enabled to found a college known as An Grianan, at Termonfeckin, County Louth, by a grant from the Kellogg Foundation Trust. At this College, various courses are run in homecraft, gardening, poultry and dairy work'. |
