Handwritten letter addressed to `Dear Chief' from Margaret Pearse, 13 October 1941. She discusses the possible sale of Cullenswood House. She hopes money can be advanced to help her pay the rates on Rathfarnham House. If this is not forthcoming and `I am compelled to give it over to the Government it will be a terrible trial, like giving away half or three quarters of my life. The place was bought by the Irish in America for mother & for me. I do so want to own it as long as life is left to me. In future, with a struggle I'll be able to pay rates, as I'm nearly clear of the school debts'. If she has to let the house go to the Government it will only be on condition that she can remain as a tenant for life. However, she will not relinquish her father's furniture which `is to me as precious as jewels and gold would be to most other people'. |

Minute to the Taoiseach from Sean MacEntee, 23 October 1941, relating to the sale by Margaret Pearse to the State of the reversionary interest she has in two bungalows on the St Enda's estate. MacEntee writes: `I think, bearing in mind all the circumstances of the case, but especially the fact that Miss Pearse's mother has left the State a very valuable property, which presumably, as distinct from the House itself, can ultimately be utilised in whatever way appears to the Minister for Finance to be the most profitable, Miss Pearse's offer is one which we should strain a point to accept'. |

Description: |
Copy letter to Sean MacEntee, from D O'Donovan, 12 November 1941, enclosing recent correspondence between himself and Miss Pearse relating to water rates owed by her. He references the £5 paid by Miss Pearse. `I cannot regard the payment made as being sufficient, but my concern at the moment arises from the fact that inability to pay this small sum [her water rates before she paid the £5 stood at £19.10.3, including arrears for several years] is pleaded by a ratepayer who also owes rates amounting to the large sum of £630.1.10'. |

Description: |
Copy letter to Miss Pearse [from Sean MacEntee], 14 November 1941. He has learned of her water rate bill and her offer of £5 towards it. `The Commissioner is very dissatisfied with such an offer and I must say that I think myself it is far from adequate. I have pressed the Commissioner to proceed to the last extremity in all cases where people who can pay are not doing so, and I am afraid that he will have to view this water-rate bill in that light unless something more than £5 can be paid at once. I would appeal to you earnestly to make a more reasonable offer if the whole amount cannot be liquidated in one payment'. A copy of this letter is enclosed in a minute to the Taoiseach, 14 November 1941, together with other documents. |
