Description:

Memorandum from the Department of Education on the proposed cut in National Teachers' Salaries, 27 February 1933. The memorandum states that the 'scheme prepared by the Department of Finance does not seem to have been prepared with full insight into the position'. The Department of Education recommends consultation with the Irish National Teachers' Organisation. The Department of Education puts forward an alternative scheme in which 'there would be three scales for teachers - a scale for women teachers admitting of a substantial cut; a scale for unmarried men teachers admitting also of a substantial cut and a scale for married men teachers in which the salaries would only be slightly affected'. The granting of pensions to junior assistant mistresses is also discussed.

Description:

Memorandum from the Department of Education on the proposed cut in National Teachers' Salaries, 9 March 1933. The Department recommends a differentiation between married men teachers, women teachers and unmarried men teachers. 'It is believed that, with the serious rise in house rent, a cut would weigh heavily on married men teachers and that unmarried men teachers (who have the same scale as married men) and women teachers could much more easily bear the main brunt of the reductions'. The proposed new scales of pay are given for the following categories: trained women teachers; trained unmarried men teachers; trained married men teachers; untrained men and women teachers and junior assistant mistresses.
