Record 13996 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Hand-written letter from Mrs Nellie Gallagher, Arranmore Island, County Donegal, to Eamon de Valera, 31 November 1936, in relation to the distribution of the relief fund for victims of the Arranmore boating accident. Mrs Gallagher outlines her own position, 'My sister Kate O'Donnell and an only brother Patrick were lost in the Arranmore drowning disaster in November 1935. The two were our family's chief supporters. A sister incapacitated through blindness from doing any work or caring for herself in the least degree was supported by our sister and brother'. She protests against the manner in which the compensation is being distributed, 'My sister has been asked to sign for £40 per annum as an allowance out of the Fund. We are protesting against this allowance. This distribution means that a family who lost only one member may receive more than our family who lost two. My sister RIP was head of our family'.
