Hand-written letter from Father Traynor, The Presbytery, Sandymount, County Dublin, to the Department of Local Government and Public Health, 11 October 1935, in relation to the case of a widow, Mrs Slowey, who is to be evicted from her home by the Sailors' and Soldiers' Land Trust. The letter refers to previous correspondence between the Department and the Killester Tenants' Rights Association, 'your letter has been a source of regret and disappointment, regret that the eviction of the widow is taking place at noon today, and disappointment that you state you have no function which would enable you to intervene in the matter'. He requests the Department's assistance and points out that 'the eviction of a widow who has fully met her liabilities is foreign to the custom of Local Government in this country'. |

Description: |
Newsclipping from the 'Evening Herald', 5 August 1950, containing an article entitled 'Tilson Case: Appeal Dismissed'. This article refers to a dispute over the religion of three children of a mixed marriage. 'The father is a member of the Church of Ireland, and the mother is a Catholic. Before his marriage in a Catholic Church, the father had signed an undertaking that all the children would be brought up in the Catholic religion, but later he had stated that the undertaking was not binding on him'. It states that the Supreme Court directed the father and the trustees of Mrs Smyly's Home, 'The Bird's Nest', Dun Laoghaire, to hand over the children to the mother at once. It outlines the background to the case. 'Mr Tilson had given every assurance that he would do everything in his power to safeguard the religion of Miss Barnes and he undertook to bring up any children born of the proposed marriage in the religion of the Catholic Church'. |
