'Is there a little orphan child who could use love - a good home - every care and advantage in life and fill in on a lonely heart - torn by war. Boy or girl or both under 10 years. There is spacious ground, comfortable house we own, bear a good reputation and can be thoroughly investigated. We are a sober, steady, active middle aged couple alone. Our forerunners came from Mayo'. Covering letter from S Mac Ugo, to the Secretary, Adoption Board, 45 Saint Stephen's Green, Dublin, 25 May 1954. |

Letter from James Enright, Muintir na Tire, Ballyduff, County Waterford, to the Taoiseach, 30 October 1950, regarding a meeting of the Ballyduff Parish Council, at which the following resolution was passed: 'We the people of Ballyduff Parish protest emphatically against the failure of the responsible authorities to provide the district with a resident Medical Officer, a resident Midwife, housing and an adequate supply of pure water'. The letter also encloses a recent local press report on the meeting. 'He could understand why a midwife was not appointed. No applications had been received for the position owing to the totally inadequate salary offered. The matter should be remedied without delay. He knew of cases where poor people had to hire cars late at night to go in search of a midwife in Tallow'. |
