Programme outlining the events and activities that are to take place during Muintir na Tire's sixth 'National Rural Week', at University College, Cork. The arrangements in relation to transport, entertainments, exhibitions and papers are given. Mrs Pearl McCarthy, Clonmel, is scheduled to give a paper entitled 'Women in Rural Life' on Women's Day, 28 July 1943. The programme also includes a list of approved residences, for example, 'Mrs O'Leary, Namur, Fernhurst Avenue, 3 single rooms, 35/- weekly'.

Letter from Rev JM Hayes, Chairman, Muintir na Tire, to Miss K O'Connell, Secretary to the Taoiseach, 19 July 1951, thanking the Taoiseach for receiving the American delegates to the International Rural Life Congress. He encloses two photographs of Blessed Pius X with a relic on each. 'One is for the Taoiseach and one is for yourself. We received these from the grand niece and nephew of Blessed Pius and they have written their names on the back'.

Description:

Report, 28 July 1951, from the Irish Ambassador to the Holy See, on the Catholic International Congress on Rural Life which was held in Rome. The report refers in particular to the part played by the Irish delegation to the Conference. 'Father John Hayes and Father Bergin, the two Irish delegates to the International Catholic Rural Congress left Rome yesterday ... Father Hayes had three laymen and four women, but they were quite passive and were not the type who could take an effective part in an International Congress'.

Newsclipping from the 'Irish Times', 17 August 1951, containing an article entitled 'Taoiseach Favours Parish Unit'. The article states that the Taoiseach visited the Muintir na Tire rural week which was held in Wexford. Dr Honoria Aughney, Wexford County Medical Officer of Health, read a paper at the rural week. 'She said that in County Wexford with a population of 90000 there were 130 tubercular patients undergoing hospital treatment. In addition there were about 600 patients on the tuberculosis register'. She also referred to other diseases. 'Diptheria, she said, still claimed victims and this was where public health became the responsibility of the parish. In County Wexford, only about half the children under school age had been inoculated against what was now looked upon as a killing disease most fatal in the early years'.

Newsclipping from the 'Irish Independent', 17 August 1951, containing an article entitled 'Muintir na Tire: Taoiseach Praises Ideal of Self-Help'. The article refers to a speech made by the Taoiseach on his visit to the Muintir na Tire rural week. In it he praised a paper which was given by Dr Honoria Aughney on rural health problems. 'Complimenting Dr Aughney on her lecture, Mr de Valera said he thought that it should be published as a post-quarter survey of the public health situation'. The contents of her paper are outlined. 'One of the most dramatic changes in the treatment of tuberculosis had been the general application of surgical measures to promote the healing of cases formerly considered hopeless'.
