Newsclipping from the 'Irish Times', 17 August 1951, containing an article entitled 'Taoiseach Favours Parish Unit'. The article states that the Taoiseach visited the Muintir na Tire rural week which was held in Wexford. Dr Honoria Aughney, Wexford County Medical Officer of Health, read a paper at the rural week. 'She said that in County Wexford with a population of 90000 there were 130 tubercular patients undergoing hospital treatment. In addition there were about 600 patients on the tuberculosis register'. She also referred to other diseases. 'Diptheria, she said, still claimed victims and this was where public health became the responsibility of the parish. In County Wexford, only about half the children under school age had been inoculated against what was now looked upon as a killing disease most fatal in the early years'. |
