Description:

Copy letter to Miss Maire Comerford, Sandyford, County Dublin, from M O'Muimhneachain, 2 May 1945, in relation to her correspondence on the subject of conditions in Portlaoighise Prison. The letter refers to the conditions surrounding the prisoners' attendance at Mass. 'All prisoners including those on punishment are allowed to attend Mass. Prison discipline and the ordinary proprieties must, however, be observed. Record 14035 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Draft letter to L Ni Nuallain, Marlboro Road, Dublin, unsigned, August 1945, regarding her recent letter requesting the release of all political prisoners. The letter states that the Taoiseach understands her feelings on the subject, however, the interest of the community as a whole must be safeguarded. It also informs her that a number of political prisoners have been released. 'The last of those Irish citizens who were interned under the Emergency Powers was released a week ago ... the cases of all sentenced prisoners of the class referred to by you were recently reviewed and the Government decided in the light of the individual circumstances to remit the unexpired portions of the sentences in ten cases'. The remaining prisoners are perceived as a threat to the State and the Taoiseach's attitude towards them is outlined in a speech which is enclosed with the letter. 'The enclosed extract from a speech made by the Taoiseach in DáilÉireann on the 1 December last contains a reminder of the possible consequences of ill-judged leniency and expresses generally his attitude towards this problem'. A hand-written note states that this draft letter was amended on the Taoiseach's instructions.
