Letter from the Irish Local Government Officials' Union, to Sean McEntee, Minister for Local Government and Public Health, 26 February 1943, on the subject of emergency increases in the pay of Local Government Officials. The letter states that there is dissatisfaction amongst the Union's members with the manner in which the scheme is being administered. 'In the Dublin Corporation Service there never has been either a sex or marriage differentiation. The principle of equal pay for equal work has always obtained'.

Statement issued to the Press by the Government Information Bureau, 1944, on the subject of emergency supplementary allowances for persons in allowance of Old Age and Blind Pensions and Disablement Benefit. The statement also refers to the payment of bonuses to civil servants whose total remuneration does not exceed £500. Rates are given for male and female civil servants, for example, 'Whole-time officers whose total remuneration does not exceed £500 a year or the appropriate weekly equivalent: Married, widowers and widowers - total emergency bonus of 10/- a week; Unmarried, male and female: total emergency bonus of 8/- a week'.

Description:

Memorandum for the Government from the Department of Health, 30 April 1947, regarding the remuneration of Institutional Officers of Local Authorities. The memorandum states that the rates of pay for certain types of work are very low, for example, 'in the case of domestic staff of institutions such as wardsmaids and kitchen-maids the existing scales of remuneration are in many cases exceptionally low'. It states that there have been difficulties in recruiting maids to fill such posts. The memorandum also examines the pay rates for nurses. 'It is proposed to approve of similar percentage increases in scale salaries to the nursing staffs employed in the other mental hospitals, if proposals in that regard are submitted'.

The article states that the Grangegorman Mental Hospital Board recorded its dissatisfaction at the rates of increase in pay for nursing and attendant staff put forward by the Minister for Health. 'The bonuses approved ranged from 3/9 to 5/6 for women and 7/6 to 11/- for men'.

Description:

Memorandum from the Department of Health to the Secretary, Department of Finance, 30 October 1948, regarding the question of the payment of a temporary bonus to members of the nursing and attendant staff employed by the Grangegorman District Mental Hospital Authority. The memorandum states that the Government's proposal distinguished between resident and non-resident and male and female workers. 'The Unions representing the Attendant and Nursing Staff in the Grangegorman Mental Hospital expressed complete dissatisfaction with the proposed bonus'. The proposals which were put forward by the Board of Management of the Hospital accorded equal treatment to male and female officers.
