Record 14085 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Confidential Memorandum from the Department of Industry and Commerce, March 1945, relating to travel permit statistics for 1944. The memorandum states that there has been a reduction in emigration to Britain. 'The year 1944 witnessed a very sharp decline as compared with previous years in the number of new travel permits issued to persons leaving the country to take up employment in Great Britain and Northern Ireland ... this decrease is due partly to the restrictions on travel imposed during the period prior to the Allied landings in France'. Paragraph 5, states that the decline in emigration is more evident in the figures pertaining to male emigration than female emigration. Table 1, on page 2 of the memorandum explores the occupational classification of emigrants. 'In the case of females it will be seen that employment in Domestic Service and housekeeping accounted for 47 per cent of the total. In 1943 it is noted that 48 per cent of females migrated to these types of employment and 42 per cent in 1942. In spite of the travel ban the number of females leaving for domestic service remained quite high'. Covering letter from the Department of Industry and Commerce, to the Secretary, Department of the Taoiseach, 19 March 1945.
