Description: |
Copy letter from F O'Donoghue, Douglas Road, Cork, to Dr RJ Hayes, Director, National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin, July 1954, relating to a report on the GPO area in 1916 which was compiled by Diarmuid Lynch. The letter states that the original copy of the report has been mislaid and asks if a copy exists in the Department of the Taoiseach. 'In the circumstances it would appear that the best hope of tracing a copy is to follow up the one which Diarmuid Lynch sent to Mr de Valera on 15 September 1945 and which Miss K O'Connell acknowledged on 24 September 1945 ... I wonder is I may trouble you to take the matter up again with Miss O'Connell'. |

Description: |
Annotated copy, 15 September 1945, of Diarmuid Lynch's report on the GPO area in 1916. The report outlines at length activities at the General Post Office during the Easter Rising of 1916. A separate section of the report contains Lynch's comments upon marginal notations which were made by Mrs Kathleen Clarke. He outlines the aim of his report and the circumstances surrounding its compilation. 'The accompanying statements of operations was compiled be Diarmuid Lynch at the request of the GPO Garrison Committee'. He corrects what he perceives as inaccuracies in Mrs Clarke's version of events. 'Her assertion (evidently based on misconception of what Tom said to her while he awaited execution) that Tom Clarke was President of the Provisional Government of the Irish Republic on Easter Monday, 1916, is obviously wrong ... The statement that he declined in favour of Padraig Pearse I accept as fact'. |
