Description: |
Report from the Department of Education on university population and expenditure in Saorstat Éireann, 14 March 1933. The report gives the proportion of the population in university institutions and the cost of the universities to the State. The position of women graduates is outlined. 'Some of these women take posts in Catholic schools in Great Britain but there is no evidence to show that even women graduates in Arts of the National University leave the country in any great extent. It is very probable that the great majority of them get married at home'. The role that a married female graduate may play in the upbringing of her family is discussed, 'if the education they have received during their University course is suitable these married graduates should undoubtedly help to raise the cultural and educational level of Catholic family life here and so play an important part in the development of the nation'. It is recommended that for those women who get only pass degrees it might be 'more helpful to the country in general if many women who take degrees in Arts and Commerce received a sound practical training in Domestic Science'. The report also highlights the overcrowding that happens as an increasing number of women take university courses. |
