Description:

Annual Report of the Governors and Guardians of the Hospital for the relief of poor lying-in women in Dublin, commonly called the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, 3 March 1930. The report gives, amongst others, the figures for the numbers of patients admitted to the hospital; the numbers attended to at their own homes; the number of patients who died; the number of births and details of the expenditure and general maintenance of the hospital. The report also includes a short history of the hospital. The rules of admission to the hospital are outlined, 'all patients are expected to contribute towards their expenses, provided they can afford to do so, but no one is refused. Patients are not admitted until the confinement is imminent, unless their state of health requires it'. Rules for the admission of pupil midwives and gynaecological nurses are detailed. The report includes photographs of the hospital facilities. A list at the end of the report gives the names of those who have made subscriptions or voluntary contributions. Other charitable activities associated with the hospital are also referred to.

All payments must be made weekly in advance ... There are no private rooms available'. The rules for the admission of pupil midwives and gynaecological nurses are outlined. The report includes photographs of the hospital facilities. Subscriptions and voluntary contributions are cited at the end of the report. Other charitable activities associated with the hospital are also mentioned, 'Rotunda Hospital Infant Clothing Fund. Report for 1932. Committee includes: Mrs Armstrong, Miss Bennett, Miss A Cruice, Mrs Daly'.

Description:

Memorandum from the Minister for Industry and Commerce, September 1933, indicating the necessity for the amendment of the Factory and Workshop Acts, 1901 to 1920. The memorandum contains representations from trade unions in respect of hours of work; suitability of premises; proportion of juveniles to adults; sanitary conditions; prohibition of home work and an increase in the numbers of inspectors. Section (e) deals with the employment of women. The Minister's intends to 'prohibit by Order the employment of women either in certain specified processes or in an industry as a whole'. Heavy engineering, manufacture of machinery, mining and smelting are amongst the industries to be reserved for men. The Minister 'is convinced of the necessity for statutory prohibition, for without it, women may rapidly be recruited for most classes of industry that are likely to be developed here'.

Description:

Amendments of the Factory and Workshop Acts, 1901 to 1920, including regulations, welfare orders and special orders, 1933. The document gives the arrangement of draft headings which includes the following: health and welfare; safety; hours and restrictions on the employment of women. Existing Acts are listed. The section on safety mentions a representation made by the Irish Women Workers' Union with regard to seating facilities for those whose work is done standing. It is noted that night work for women and young children is prohibited under the existing legislation and that the new act will also be in accordance with the International Labour Convention on this matter. Section VIII, page 22, deals with restrictions on employment of women. 'After consultation with the representatives of employers and workers concerned, the Minister is to have the power to prohibit the employment of women in any process or in any industry'.

Note giving the general scheme of proposed legislation on the consolidation and amendment of the law relating to factories and workshops, 1933. The note lists the existing laws which govern this area including , 'The Employment of Women Act, 1907 and the Employment of Women, Young Persons and Children Act, 1920'. The legislation provides for further restrictions as regards the employment of women.
