Description:

Newsclipping of a letter to the editor of the 'Irish Press' from Dorothy Macardle, 9 November 1944, on the subject of the language revival in Czechoslovakia. The letter is written in response to an article on the subject. The article stated that Dorothy Macardle was mistaken in her analysis of the system of language revival in that country. 'You have charged me in a leading article with being mistaken about the facts of teaching in Czechoslovakia. I would not take up your space with a reply were it not that to let this charge go by default might invalidate a booklet on the subject which President Bene's Department of Information commissioned me to write and which will shortly appear'. She reiterates her belief that children should receive their elementary education in the language which is spoken in their homes. 'The avoidance of the confusion and discouragement caused to a young child by being required to master two languages at once was one of the factors which I wished to emphasise'. The editor's response to this letter is also included in the newsclipping. 'She is wrong in attributing the rule that minorities in Czechoslovakia should have their own schools to a desire that little children should not be discouraged by having to learn two languages'.

Description:

Newsclipping of a letter to the editor of the 'Irish Press' from Mairin Ni Mathghamhne, Rathmines, Dublin, 8 December 1944, on the subject of the Gaelic League. She challenges the allegations made against the League by the Trinity College Gaelic Society. 'To say that members of the Gaelic League must give up their freedom of thought and action is a fallacy. To any sincerely patriotic Irishman who desires the revival of the National language the rules embodied in the present constitution of the League cannot mean restriction ... Tadhg Uasal Mac Ionnractaigh was not well informed when he confidently declared that the Gaelic League had no free classes'.
