Record 16231 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Hand-written letter from Mrs Agnes Boyd, Newry, County Down, to Eamon de Valera, 30 September 1942, regarding the case of her daughter, Mrs O'Hagan, a prisoner in Mountjoy Jail. She states that her daughter was lucky to have refused parole as she may have been implicated in a crime which took place during the period of her proposed release. 'It certainly was God's blessing she refused that time, because if she was at home, when that Detective was shot, she might have been taken up on suspicion, as it was he who arrested her daughter Carmel'. She also outlines the circumstances of her daughter's family. 'They are certainly getting neglected. The father is useless ... you will please this time arrange for her children's sake, especially two, who should be on the way to do for themselves, at their golden age and pity the youngest 6 years'.

Put yourself in my place, how hard it would be on you if your daughter was separated from her child, which she never will please God ... you don't know the suffering at home without the mother, nothing to do, nowhere to go and no one to do anything for these poor children ... I enclose photo of child who wants to serve her time to the Drapery, but with no one to help her'.

Record 16237 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Hand-written letter from Maire Ni Mhaicin, Emmet Street, Dublin, recipient unknown, 3 December 1942, requesting parole for her nephew, Sean Magee, an internee at the Curragh Camp. She outlines the circumstances surrounding his arrest. 'He is not a member of any illegal organisation. But during recent municipal elections, he was Director of Elections for Republican Candidates, O'Kelly and Bohan. As such he made speeches. His public meetings, always well attended, were also well conducted ... On the night of September 5th he was taken from his home, between hours of 12 and 1 o'clock, by three men stating he was wanted for questioning. They showed no warrant or credentials'. She asks for parole to allow her nephew to sit a book-keeping examination. She also refers to his young age and the fact that her brother gave his life for Ireland. 'The Minister wrote that he has given careful consideration to your representations, but he regrets he cannot see his way to grant parole to this man. Now it speaks well for careful consideration that this man is a mere boy of eighteen years old ... I ask those things in recognition of my brother's life for the State'.
