Record 16272 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Letter from Maire Comerford, Sandyford, County Dublin, to the Taoiseach, 12 April 1945, regarding
J Crofton's statement on conditions in Portlaoighise [Portlaois] Jail. She encloses a letter which she received from Joe Callaghan relating to the conditions in the Jail. Her letter also refers to the mistreatment of prisoners at the Curragh Camp. 'No suggestion has been made that prisoners are at present subject to physical violence and, if we knew the date of this complaint it might coincide with the period which lasted for several years, when very serious abuses of this nature were of constant occurrence in the Curragh. On this there would be no difficulty whatever in obtaining abundant evidence'. She urges him to allow the prisoners to attend Mass and to wear their own clothing. 'In the period which may still pass before you decide on a jail clearance might I ask that at least freedom to attend Mass be removed from the list of privileges which prisoners must earn by good behaviour'.
