Letter from J McKellar, War Organisation of the British Red Cross and Order of St John of Jerusalem, London, to the Secretary, Irish Red Cross Society, Merrion Square, Dublin, 14 August 1942, regarding the Contessa M Spetia di Radione's request for information on her relatives in England. 'Mrs Astley Smith, however, is still living at Bridgeholme, Egton Bridge, York, and has written to thank us for sending on the enquiry from her niece the Countess Spetia. She would like to inform her that all the family are well'. Covering letter from the Office of the President of Ireland, to the Secretary to the Government, 6 September 1942. 'As regards the claim made by the Countess to have met him, the President desires me to say that while it is true that before the war of 1914-1918 he did live in Blackrock and was a visitor to Grange Con, he has no recollection of having met this lady. At the same time owing to the long period which has elapsed since then he does not feel sufficiently certain to disclaim all knowledge of her'. |
