Statement relating to the career and employment particulars of Miss N McAsey. The following is included under the heading `National Service': `Miss McAsey's paid service with the I.R.A. seems to date from August, 1921, when she was employed as Confidential Typist by Major-General Dalton, then Director of Training. Since that date she has been continuously employed under the Department of Defence as a Stenographer. Miss McAsey claims that she was employed by Major-General Dalton pre-Truce, … For a considerable time before, during and after the period of hostilities which began in 1922, Miss McAsey rendered invaluable service as a Confidential Stenographer'. |

Description: |
Copy statement by Nancy McAsey, 9 October 1924. She wishes to bring to attention facts regarding her claim for special consideration. She details her service to date. `Considering that I relinquished a well-paid post in the City to undertake somewhat onerous duties with the I.R.A. at a time when such a position was not attractive, I think that, as an act of justice, credit for pre-Truce service should be given and sanction obtained for my appointment as a Civil Servant'. |

Description: |
Copy letter to the Secretary, Executive Council, from Piaras Beaslai, 6 June 1928, relating to the case of Miss Lily Mernin's claim for establishment as a civil servant on the basis of past national service. `You are aware that Miss Mernin did invaluable work for Intelligence, at great risk to herself, in 1920-21. After the truce she was dismissed by the British … and it was understood that she was to go into the paid employ of I.R.A. intelligence. Collins gave her a lump sum to take a long holiday, as she had a regular nervous breakdown at the time. She returned to Dublin in June, 1922, and was immediately sent to work as a Shorthand Typist in Oriel House. Since then she has been constantly in Army employment.' The letter further states that Miss Mernin is the sole support of an aged aunt and invalid sister. `She is not very young and the study of Irish (which, of course, she had no opportunity of studying while in the employ of the British) she found rather difficult'. |

Memorandum from the Department of Industry and Commerce to the Secretary, Department of the President, 28 November 1929, submitting particulars of the claim for establishment in the Civil Service of Miss K Fleming, employed by the Department of Industry and Commerce in the Employment Exchange, Athlone.
