Record 1691 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Handwritten letter from Dan Connell, Oakland, California, to EP McCarron, Secretary, Irish Free State, 24 September 1928, requesting information of the validity of a sale made by him of a holding of land in Ballina, County Mayo. He states that he was coerced into a compulsory sale for certain reasons. He married against the wishes of his mother, Bridgit Connell and stepsister, Lizzie Dolan. About two years after his father's death life was made `so dangerous and miserable for my wife, by threats of violence and even poisoning, that for her protection I was compelled to accept a fraction of the value of my inheritance, and get out at once'. The land was sold to his brother-in-law who at a later date sold or leased the land to a Mr Keane, including the 1/2 acre his mother held for the terms of her natural life. He continues: `I would like to know if my mother, while she lived had the legal right to dispose of, by sale or by "Will" the half-acre (1/2) which she was allowed to retain - according to certain provisions in the "Will" [made by his father] - during her life, and which was part of the whole estate bequeathed to me? or if the original compulsory sale to J. J. Gilboy was valid, did the half-acre (1/2) in question pass along with the whole?'

She cites the situation of Sighle Humphries as a case in point. `She was arrested last April, charged with a crime few people have ever heard of, embracery. The jury before whom Miss Humphries was brought disagreed as to the evidence connecting her with the leaflet, but this young girl is still locked up in Mountjoy awaiting another trial, her whole summer lost in these hideous conditions'.
