Record 1842 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Report of the Select Committee on the Moneylenders Bill, 1929, with proceedings of the special committee and minutes of the evidence heard. For example, page 69, the evidence of the witness Mr K is given. He stated before the committee that a fortnight previously his wife made a confession to him that she had been dealing with moneylenders. `It has taken a lot out of her and at present her health is absolutely broken up. She got into the hands of Jewish moneylenders through an introduction from a lady she knew. I would not have allowed her in the ordinary way to have anything to do with this particular lady. She has now got into the hands of 12 moneylenders'. Mr K was then asked what was the largest sum his wife owed. `One is £13 form a female lender. She actually received on £1 7s., but £9 was charged to her. The rest was for other loans she got which were deducted, and interest added on'. Evidence is heard from women, for example, Miss Kathleen Brown was examined on behalf of Mrs Morris, 66 Abbey Street, Dublin. Much of the evidence discusses the problem of married women borrowing without the knowledge of their husbands, for example, page 45, Deputy Little stated, `Some of us were keen on the section dealing with married women, because moneylenders came to the house and lent money to a married woman. That woman may have less knowledge of business than her husband, and the moneylender would play upon her fears and upon her ignorance of business'.

Record 1845 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Letter to Sir Walter Nugent, Baronet, from Edward Eliot, a member of the firm of Tamplin, Joseph, Ponsonby and Ryde, London, 12 October 1929, relating to Russborough House near Blessington. Lady Turton cannot afford to maintain the house and it has occurred to her that it might be used to benefit the Irish nation, possibly in the capacity of an Art Gallery or a Museum. `If any such scheme could be evolved, Lady Turton would be prepared to consider very seriously making a gift of the house and of the demesne land to the Irish nation, but she would not, of course, be able to offer to the nation any endowment for the upkeep of the place.' This letter is enclosed in a covering letter to WT Cosgrave from Walter Nugent, 17 October 1929.
