Newsclipping of an editorial from the 'Irish Press', 14 April 1961, concerning a speech made by the Taoiseach, Sean Lemass, at the annual meeting of the Irish Countrywomen's Association [ICA]. The opening paragraph of the editorial outlines the aims and objectives of the ICA and praises the role played by the Association in the campaign for rural water supplies. It also states that Mr Lemass's speech concentrated on the problems faced by small farmers. 'The ICA have been prime movers in the demand for such amenities as electricity, piped water, better housing and better transport'.

The editorial refers to a speech on the subject of small farmers which was made by the Taoiseach at the Annual General Meeting of the Irish Countrywomen's Association [ICA]. 'When the Taoiseach addressed the annual meeting of the ICA in Dublin during the week he said that electricity, piped water, better accommodation, roads and comfortable dwellings are essential features in any rural improvement programme. That statement is quite true and if the flight from the land is to be halted, it is imperative that such a programme should be implemented with vigour and imagination'.

Newsclipping of an editorial from the 'Clonmel Nationalist', 22 April 1961, outlining a speech which was made by the Taoiseach at the Annual General Meeting of the Irish Countrywomen's Association [ICA]. 'To be warmly welcomed therefore is the statement of An Taoiseach, to the ICA annual general meeting, that the Government have decided to carry out a systematic examination of all the possibilities of increasing output of smaller farms with the aim of preparing a comprehensive programme for these small farm areas'.

The article refers to a meeting of the Central Council of Tuairim at which delegates discussed the problems faced by development associations. 'The setting up of a central advisory service to supply information to development associations was advocated by Mr RM Boland'. The speakers included Miss K Shern, Ballybunion, County Kerry.

Report on community development issued by the Economic Development Branch of the Department of Finance, August 1961. The report concerns the progress of community development in other countries and includes a survey of relevant voluntary organisations in Ireland. Section 4, page 15, deals with the Irish Countrywomen's Association [ICA]. The aims and objectives of the Association are outlined in detail. 'To develop and improve the conditions of rural life in Ireland by means of educating countrywomen in arts and crafts, in agricultural science, in domestic science, social studies ... in 1955, the ICA was enabled to found a college known as An Grianan, at Termonfeckin, County Louth, by a grant from the Kellogg Foundation Trust. At this College, various courses are run in homecraft, gardening, poultry and dairy work'.
