Description:

Copy letter to the Taoiseach, signature unclear, 27 October 1961, relating to the Red Cross. It refers in particular to the Geneva Conventions and provision for recognition and protection for the Red Cross emblem and those who carry it. The letter outlines the role played by the Chairman of the Irish Red Cross Society, Mrs Barry, in negotiations. 'Mrs Barry's position in the councils of the International Red Cross is impaired somewhat by the fact that the Geneva Conventions of 1949 have not yet been ratified by this country. The Department of External Affairs are in touch with the Parliamentary Draftsman regarding the preparation of a Bill to ratify the Conventions'.

Newsclipping from the 'Irish Press', 23 March 1962, containing an article entitled '6 Counties uneasy at Border will go speech'. The article outlines the reaction of Stormont deputies to speeches made by the Taoiseach on the subject of the Common Market and partition. 'Mrs Heron, one of the delegates, pressed the Government to seek the most direct representation possible at Brussels. It must be remembered, she said, that while their next door neighbour, a Christian democracy, was also applying for full membership of the EEC they still refused to recognise the constitution of the Six Counties'. The article also refers to a proposal put forward in Stormont by Mrs Gilpin relating to cross-border co-operation between police forces.

Memorandum from Erskine Childers, Minister for Transport and Power, to the Taoiseach, 16 March 1962, outlining his observations on the report issued by the Scandinavian group on design in Ireland. Childers comments upon the report's findings in the following areas of design: textiles, textile printing, linen, tweeds, handmade carpet, glass, graphic art and packaging. 'There are many societies concerned with the Arts, organisations like the Royal Dublin Society and the Irish Countrywomen's Association, and so forth. They should be drawn into the ambit of the body, either as a Consultative Committee or as Associate Members. This should also be considered'.
