Letter from Leslie Bean T de Barra, Chairman, Irish Red Cross Society, to the Taoiseach, Sean F Lemass, 9 February 1962, thanking him for his decision to broadcast an appeal for the 'Freedom from Hunger' campaign. She outlines the manner in which the campaign has progressed and encloses two copy letters which she received from Aer Lingus and Bord Fáilte. 'Some are considering the idea, but the replies from Mr Dempsey [Aer Lingus] and Mr O'Driscoll [Bord Fáilte] were disappointing'.

'I am sure that Telefis Éireann would co-operate, in advance of the appeal next May to precede the public collection. I thank you for your promise to keep me advised of the success of the campaign'.

Letter from Leslie Bean T de Barra, Chairman, Irish Red Cross Society, Dublin, to the Taoiseach, Sean Lemass, 13 February 1962, thanking him for his encouraging note in relation to the 'Freedom from Hunger' campaign. She encloses a letter which was received by Miss MB Murphy, Assistant General Secretary, from R O'Farachain, Controller of Programmes, Radio Éireann, in response to her request to broadcast an additional appeal on the station. Bean T de Barra asks the Taoiseach to persuade the Controller to broadcast an extra appeal. 'As this is a National matter, perhaps you would use some of your well known generous persuasion to have our request granted'.

Copy letter from the Taoiseach, Sean F Lemass, to M Hillard, Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, 15 February 1962, relating to the 'Freedom from Hunger' appeal which is being organised in Ireland by the Red Cross Society. The Taoiseach asks the Minister if it would be possible to incorporate references to the appeal into televised programmes. 'Mrs Tom Barry, Chairman of the Red Cross, has however informed me that she is experiencing some difficulty in arousing enthusiasm for this campaign to an extent that would get factory collections and similar activities going properly'.

He refers in particular to the possibility of having a reference to the campaign made in certain television programmes. 'I will ask the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs to request the Radio Éireann Authority to give all possible help in this way, or in any other manner which may suggest itself to them'.

Letter from MG Barry, Department of Agriculture to NS O'Nuallain, Secretary, Department of the Taoiseach, 22 February 1962, relating to the 'Freedom from Hunger' campaign. It states that the British Committee for the campaign have received a request for information from the Irish United Nations Association. Barry states that this may not be to the liking of Mrs Barry, Chairman, Irish Red Cross Society, the group responsible for 'Freedom for Hunger' campaign in Ireland.

Letter from NG Barry, Department of Agriculture, to O'Cearbhaill, Assistant Secretary, Department of the Taoiseach, 23 February 1962, relating to the 'Freedom from Hunger' campaign. 'Mrs de Barra, Chairman of the Irish Red Cross Society, has since expressed the view that if it was decided to devote the National collection to some specific purpose it would assist the Society in its fund-raising activities'.

The note states that the campaign is being organised by the Irish Red Cross Society and that the ten thousand pounds which was donated by the Government has been handed over to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation [FOA]. It also explores the possibility of directing the campaign appeal towards a specific project.

Copy letter to Leslie Bean T de Barra, Chairman, Irish Red Cross Society, Dublin, from the Taoiseach, Sean F Lemass, 1 March 1962, relating to the 'Freedom from Hunger' campaign. The Taoiseach encloses a copy of a note which he received from the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs on the matter. 'I am glad to tell you that Radio Éireann has promised to do everything it reasonably can to assist the Red Cross and that the matter is being put before the Programme Controllers on both the sound and television sides'.
