Description:

Report of the Executive Committee of the 'Freedom from Hunger' campaign, 10 April 1962. The opening section of the report outlines the amount collected to-date. It also refers to the seminar on the campaign which was organised by the Irish Red Cross Society. Amongst others, delegates from the following organisations were present: Catholic Girls Guides, Girls' Friendly Society, Irish Countrywomen's Association, Irish Girl Guides, Irish Housewives' Association, Irish Nurses' Organisation, NUI Women Graduates' Association and Young Women's Christian Association. The following women were also in attendance: Mrs FE Hackett, Mrs JJ Clarke, Mrs AM Hooper, Miss B Morris and Miss Brazil. The Society's staff on duty included Miss S Cullen, Miss U Mansfield, Miss L Mangan and Miss MB Murphy. Dr Elizabeth Doherty spoke on her work in Africa. Copy letter from MJ Barry, Department of Agriculture, to Mrs de Barra, Chairman, Irish Red Cross Society, 17 April 1962, concerning the 'Freedom from Hunger' campaign. It refers in particular to the selection of a suitable action project. 'Our initial feeling here was that if we were to assist one particular country the claims of Nigeria were very strong… we are still inclined to feel that of all the underdeveloped regions our ties with Africa in general and Nigeria in particular are stronger'. He also explores the type of project that may be undertaken.

'The French Legation has decided to donate 25% of the admission costs … to the Society's "Freedom from Hunger" Campaign and the same amount to the Central Remedial Clinic'.

'I have been notified by Radio Éireann that you will broadcast an appeal for the campaign on Monday 28 May and that I am to follow with one on Friday 1 June'. She also informs him that Mr Sean Keating, President, Royal Hibernian Academy, has agreed to design cards appealing for support for the campaign.
