Hand-written note from the Department of the Taoiseach, 19 May 1962, relating to the 'Freedom from Hunger' appeal. 'Miss Brazil, Department of Agriculture, says that there are reports of famine conditions in Tanganyika. In this regard she points out that the… campaign is not intended to deal with famine and, accordingly, if these reports are confirmed, the Taoiseach would not be expected to refer to them in his appeal'.

Newsclipping from the 'Irish Press', 1 August 1962, containing an article entitled 'Missionaries: tremendous Irish work in Tanganyika'. The article refers to a speech which was made by the Tanganyikan Minister for Agriculture, Dr Derek Bryceson. In it, he praised the work undertaken by the Medical Missionaries of Mary. 'Sister Pauline Hilliard, daughter of Mr Hilliard, Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, was at present working as a doctor ... Mr Bryceson is the only white man in the cabinet. His wife, formerly Patricia Littleton, is a native of Bantry, County Cork'. The article outlines the current circumstances in Tanganyika and also refers to the activities of the Irish Red Cross Society. 'Mrs Tom Barry, Chairman of the Irish Red Cross, said they had now collected £30,000 for the "Freedom from Hunger" campaign'.
