Memorandum from the Department of Health for the Government, 25 June 1962, concerning proposed amendments to the Marriage Acts. It refers in particular to the amendment of laws relating to the age of marriage and the legitimisation of certain marriages not at present recognisable here. 'With the exception of Spain, this part of Ireland is the only State in Western Europe where a boy of 14 and a girl of 12 may legally contract a marriage'. Paragraph 8 of the memorandum states that the Minister for Health has received requests for an amendment to the law from the following groups: Catholic Women's Federation of Secondary School Unions; Women Graduates' Association, National University; Irish Countrywomen's Association; The Women Graduates' Association, Trinity College; Institute of Almoners; Irish Save the Children Fund, Saor an Leanbh; Girls' Friendly Society and the Women's Health Organisation. 'It is patent from this list that the proposed reform is generally desired by those who can be taken as expressing the feminine view'. |

Newsclipping from the 'Irish Press', 22 March 1962, containing a newspaper article entitled 'Eight cardinals get the red biretta: colourful ceremony in Clementine Hall'. The article refers to the conferring of Cardinal Browne. It also states that the President and Mr de Valera visited three Irish convents in Rome. 'At the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, they were received by the American-born Mother General, Mother Helena Flynn, and Assistant Mother General, Mother Brendan O'Keeffe from Killarney. The President met thirty sisters in the community and sixteen novices and postulants, all of whom came from Ireland'. The President also visited the Convent of Salvatore Mundi and the Dominican Sisters of the Perpetual Rosary. |

This folder relates in particular to articles 117 to 122 of the Treaty of Rome concerning social policy. It outlines the implications for Ireland of harmonisation of social security. Section B refers in particular to equal pay for men and women. 'Once the principle is accepted it will undoubtedly result in upward pressure on female wages generally. Even the employer who uses only female labour on work reserved to females cannot hope to isolate his wage rates from the general trend'. |
