'St Enda's will, as I mentioned to you, become the property of the Nation on the death of Senator Miss Pearse ... I think you will agree that this provision seems to rule out completely any possibility of its being used as a Folk School'.

Letter from Mervyn Wall, Arts Council, Merrion Square, Dublin, to the Secretary, Department of the Taoiseach, 19 March 1963, relating to the establishment of civil list pensions in Ireland. 'They might be paid to persons of distinctive creative achievement in the arts who are advanced in years or by reason of ill-health unable any longer to fend properly for themselves'. He refers to the activities of 'Irish PEN' a group which was active in 1944. 'In January 1962 Professor Aloys Fleischmann and Mrs Cormac O'Cuilleanain (Eilis Dillon) informed the Council that they were thinking of a fund-raising campaign in Cork for the purpose of establishing a national civil list'.
