Record 294 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Letter to President de Valera from Mrs Mary Kelly, Scramogue, Longford, undated [a pencil note at the top states that the letter was received by the President's Office 20 April 1934]. Mrs Kelly states `I feel we may have offended you by accepting the King's bounty. If we have done wrong, I most humbly beg your pardon. I can only plead ignorance. It was Dr. Forde who attended me that made application to the King. We knew nothing whatever about it till the Doctor brought us the cheque. I believe the £3 was not the King's bounty. It was meant as a charity or free gift to me, but we would not touch it if we thought it would mean any offence to the Irish Government'.
