Memorandum from POC, 18 April 1946, relating to a report on St Enda's by the Commissioners of Public Works concerning the legal position relating to St Enda's. Miss Pearse, the memo states, has refused to give permission to any official from the Board of Works to examine the place in the future. The Minister for Finance does not believe that Miss Pearse would agree to pay rent if the Government took over her life interest in the property. The Minister for Finance proposed that she be allowed to occupy the house in a caretaker capacity without any obligation to pay rent or rates. |

Handwritten letter to Miss O'Connell from Mrs Margaret O'Sullivan, Killorglin, County Kerry, 3 May 1954. She writes that her husband, who was unemployed for nine months, borrowed a big sum of money which he put to his savings and started a bakery two years ago. Despite hardwork they `cannot make an honest living & pay our taxes'. Their rates have increased due to the Bakery from ten to thirty [?pounds]. She writes of other bakers who have been underselling bread. `I cannot understand that a decent citizen cannot have some protection, after all if a shopkeeper overcharges they are heavily fined & why not deal in a similar manner with the person who deprives one of an honest living'. She asks for help or advice. |
