Match 180 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Memorandum from the Department of Industry and Commerce, for the Government, 20 June 1946, regarding travel permit statistics for the year 1945. The memorandum states that there has been a net increase in population during 1939 and 1940 which was due to immigration occasioned by the war. Table 1, shows the estimated population from 31 December 1938 to 1945. 'Female population 1945 - 1483000'. Table 4, on page 4 of the memorandum classifies emigrants by age group. It shows that at ages 16 to 24 years the majority of emigrants were female. 'There has been a marked increase in the preponderance of young females in the total number going to employment. Increases in the numbers going to employment such as nursing, probably for the greater part probationer nurses is, no doubt, largely responsible for the heavier concentration of the number of female migrants under 21'. Pages 5 and 6, examine the occupation of emigrants. ''Almost half of the female migrants in 1945 went as domestic servants or housekeepers, while the bulk of the remainder went to nursing. In all, these occupations accounted for 78 per cent of the total number of females going to employment'. The memorandum also shows the emigrants county of last residence. It states that in several counties the number of female emigrants exceeded the number of males, the excess being particularly marked in County Kerry. A summary of the statistics is attached to the memorandum and this outlines several trends in female emigration. 'Over half of the emigrants and almost 70 per cent of the female emigrants were under 25 years of age ... almost half the female emigrants in 1945 went as domestic servants or housekeepers while the bulk of the remainder went to nursing occupations'. Covering letter from the Department of Industry and Commerce, to the Secretary to the Government, 20 May 1946.
