Match 210 from 'Women in 20th-century Ireland – 1922-1966: sources from the Department of the Taoiseach database'
Description:

Newsclipping from 'The Kerryman', 18 May 1946, containing an article entitled 'Derrynane Abbey for Sale: Will Kerry People See Historic Home Lost to Nation?' The article states that Derrynane Abbey, the home of Daniel O'Connell, has been put on the market. It bemoans the fact that the Government have not secured it as a national monument. 'It has been the wish of the present owner of Derrynane, Mrs Walter Heurtley who inherited it from her sister, Miss K O'Connell, in 1914, that Derrynane with its treasures should be taken over as a National Museum and Park; but now it would seem that the hammer of the auctioneer in the open market must determine its fate'. In conclusion, the article announces the newspaper's intention to publicise the plight of the Abbey.
