Newsclipping form the 'Irish Times', 15 May 1947, containing an article entitled 'Dan O'Connell: An Intimate Letter'. This article by Sean O'Faolain refers to correspondence between Daniel O'Connell and his wife. O'Faolain also draws attention to a pamphlet published in 1832 by Ellen Courtenay, in which she declares that O'Connell was the father of her son. 'Fortunately, at the time that she [Mary Courtenay] asserted that she had been the victim of O'Connell, his wife Mary was writing to him in a strain of the most affectionate and utter trust, and no Kerry woman like Mary O'Connell would have been hoodwinked by a philandering husband. Ellen Courtenay was either deluded or an impostor'. |
