Letter to `Dear Sir' from Maire A Ni Dhomhnail, Annascaul, E End, County Kerry, 5 July 1943. She wishes to bring the name of Sean Begley, Annascaul, to the attention of the Taoiseach in respect of his nomination to the Senate. She writes that he is a `man to whom Irish Ireland owes so much … In fighting her cause he was most unselfish always putting Country before self. He has been second to nobody - not even Dr Douglas Hyde in advancing the Irish language'. She continues: `Your remarked at the last Convention in Tralee that you'd be pleased to see a native of the Peninsula occupying a place in the Dail. I sincerely hope to see a W. Kerry man named in your selection - none other than Sean Begley'. |

Description: |
Memorandum from the Department of Justice `in connection with application of Joseph Blennerhassett for remission of any forfeiture or disqualification incurred by him on conviction by the Special Criminal Court', 3 September 1946. The circumstances of the conviction, the memorandum states, were: `Joseph Blennerhassett and four other men, two of whom were armed, visited the residence of a Miss Pettit, Dunloe Castle, Beaufort, County Kerry, in November, 1943, and assaulted two of her workmen. They ordered these men to cease working for Miss Pettit and they issued threats against her should she continue to employ them. To emphasise the threats Blennerhassett and another man cut the telephone wires leading to the Castle. Blennerhassett was employed at the time as Steward on Miss Pettit's estate, but he was under notice of dismissal owing to dishonesty. He enlisted the help of irresponsible members of the I.R.A. to intimidate his employer from dismissing him. The men were all convicted'. Under the terms of his conviction Blennerhassett is disqualified from State employment for seven years or from receiving money from the State in the form of a pension, etc. Now he wishes to take up employment under the County Council. He has signed an undertaking as to his future conduct. The Minister for Justice recommends that any forfeiture or disqualification incurred by him as a result of his conviction should be remitted. |
