Newsclipping from the `Irish Press', `Public Order Bill Protest', 9 March 1939. This reports on a meeting organised by Labour at the Torch Theatre, Dublin, on the previous night to protest against the Treason and Offences Against the State Bills. The meeting was supported by Old IRA and Cumann na mBan. Amongst those who spoke was Sheila Dowling who asked if there was one deputy who would defy the Party machine and give a lead in the opposition to the present coercion.

Letter from the Attorney General to the Secretary, Department of the President, 19 February 1937, in relation to a Letters Patent to enable a premises to be used as a theatre, 'Miss Davidson actually carried on the theatre with the consent and goodwill of the trustees ... the best way of effecting this purpose seems to me to make the grant to the trustees but in trust for Miss Davidson ... I desire to recommend that the Executive Council be pleased to grant a patent on the foregoing lines'.

Description:

Letters Patent in respect of the Torch Theatre, Capel Street, Dublin, 26 February 1937. This document grants Miss Jennifer Maude Elinor Davidson permission to organise the performance of plays and dramatic representations at the theatre. It outlines in detail the terms and conditions which apply to the patent, for example, 'all such interludes and performances shall be in every respect decent and becoming and not profane, blasphemous, indecent, obscene, seditious or otherwise obnoxious ... the trustees and the tenant and their or her executors, administrators and assigns shall reject out of the said Company all scandalous, disorderly or other persons ... no indecency of dress, dance or gesture to be permitted on stage'.
